- Career
- Kim Bong-gi (金鳳起) is a member of the Gimhae Kim clan, and his pen-name is Odang (梧當). He was born on November 20, 1935 at 263, Wonsasan-ri, Jusan-myeon, Buan-gun, Jeollabuk-do (present-day, Sasan-gil Jusan-myeon, Buan-gun, Jeollabuk-do). He graduated from the Jusan Public Elementary School (present-day Jusan Elementary School) on April 5, 1949, and then studied at the Sasan Chinese Characters Institute for three years until 1952. He learned twelve pieces of Gasa (narrative song) from his cross-cousin, Jeong Gyeong-tae (pen-name: Seogam, 1916-2003, Holder of Gasa, National Intangible Cultural Heritage No. 41), who lived in the same village, in 1942. After Jeong Gyeong-tae moved to Seoul, Kim Bong-gi studied Gasa under his brother-in-law, Go Min-sun (pen-name: Baeggang, Jeollabuk-do Intangible Cultural Heritage No. 21), from 1962 to 1998.
On March 15, 2002, Kim Bong-gi gave the first Kim Bong-gi Traditional Jeongak (Gasa) Recital sponsored by the Central HQ of the Korea Sijo Association, followed by a second Kim Bong-gi Traditional Jeongak (Gasa) Recital, again sponsored by the Central HQ of the Korea Sijo Association, on June 7, 2003. Kim Bong-gi was designated as the Holder of Gasa, Jeollabuk-do Intangible Cultural Heritage No. 34, on June 30, 2006. He also served as the 11th president of the Bupungyulhoe Association from 2012 to 2013. As the natural successor to his teachers Jeong Gyeong-tae and Go Min-sun, Kim Bong-gi continues to transmit and teach the Seogam style of Gasa to his students.
Kim Bong-gi’s performances of Gasa are characterized by his flexible singing in high-pitched, clear, fine tones – a style inherited by various artists including Yoo In-seong, Kim Bang-seop, Lee Byeong-ro, Kim Gi-sul, Kim Gang-sul, Kim Hyeon-sul, Lim Gyeong-wan, Kim Seok-gon, and Kim Yong-gu.

- Kim Bong-gi won has won a number of prestigious prizes, including first prize in the Eul category at the 2nd National Sijo Recital Competition organized by the Gyeongbuk Branch Office of the Korea Gukak Association on November 17,1962; third prize in the Gap category at the 2nd National Sijo Recital Competition organized by the Jeonbuk Branch Office of the Federation of Artistic & Cultural Organization of Koreaon May 18,1963; first prize in the Gukchang (national singer) category at the National Sijo Recital Competition or ganized by the Jeonju Office of the Korea Sijo Association on June 8, 1997; and first prize in the Grand prize category at the 10th National Sijo Recital Competition or ganized by the Jeonju Pungnam Festival Committee and the Jeonju Office of the Korea Sijo Association on May 27, 1998.
